- 2011 Winemaker of the Year
Roland Velich comes from a Burgenland winemaking family but initially he worked as a croupier. Back at his home vineyard, Velich publicized his idea of wanting to produce big wines of international format in Austria. He created “Tiglat”, a Chardonnay full of character from the vineyards at Apetlon in Burgenland with his brother.
In 2001 Velich, who doesn’t own any vineyards of his own, but works with contract winegrowers, started the project “Moric”, to show that big, elegant wines can be pressed out of the vine Blaufränkisch. He believes that the Burgenland is to be considered a region with a more northern, temperate climate, a region which can produce red wines similar to Burgundy wines or those from the northern Rhone rather than those from overseas. The success proves Roland Velich right, in the meantime his red wines from vineyards near Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsburg are sought after on the international market. Robert Parker’s wine critic, David Schildknecht who is responsible for Austria gave the “2006 Moric Blaufränkisch Neckenmarkter Alte Reben” 95 points – a rating, which had not been awarded to a red wine from Austria previously.
